Am 6. September ist der Masterkurs für mich beendet. Etwa die Hälfte aus dem Kurs versuchen oder haben schon erfolgreich versucht einen Job in London zu ergattern. Knapp die andere Hälfte kehrt nach Hause zurück, weil sie in England nicht Leben können, wollen oder dürfen. Als PhD Studenten bleiben zwei Engländer und ein Iraner aus meinem Kurs and myself.

Gestern habe ich noch mit Sirvan, dem Iraner, über sein Land gesprochen. Er scheint politisch sehr engagiert zu sein, obwohl das sehr gefährlich werden kann, wie er am eigenen Leib erlebt hat. Er hatte mit ein paar anderen Studenten in Tehran Zeitungsartikel in einer Studentenzeitung gegen die jetzige Regierung veröffentlicht und sie waren so gut es ging öffentlich gegen die Regierung vorgegangen. Eines Tages wurden sie von Polizisten der Regierung (in Zivil) besucht, diese warfen Tränengas in die Wohnung, darauf zerstörten sie alles Material und alle Computer. Vier Studenten wurden in dieser Auseinandersetzung erschossen. Er möchte aber kein schlechtes Bild von Iran entwerfen. Das einzig Schlechte am Land sei die aktuelle “Regierung”. Das Land selber sei sehr reich an Bodenschätzen und Natur. Die Leute seien welt offen und viele seien Atheisten (auch wenn sie das nicht immer zugeben können).

Die Diskussion erinnerte mich an eine empfehlenswerte Bilderserie von Iran. Hier ein paar Bilder davon:

Once again, I’m eating breakfast and reading the back of my cereal package. There is a series of Kellogg’s packages running with “facts” about science, explained to (?) children. If you ever wondered why children are getting more stupid with every decade, maybe that image is part of the answer.

You are presented with a text with gaps. Six gaps, the six missing words are shown in the left puke puddle.

I don’t know which age group this text is written for, but it does not sound suitable for anyone. Besides, filling in the gap is neither difficult nor pleasant. But probably the worst part is that it’s not science and contains wrong, misleading information. In 2 it says about woodlice “Bacteria in their guts help them digest their food”. Sounds slightly familiar. In 5 it says all 35′000 spider species got poisonous (= dangerous) fangs, which is not true either.

And apart from all those things, most people eat cereals for breakfast and NOBODY WANTS TO READ ABOUT COCKROACHES, SPIDERS and other insects in general.

The only thing they got right is the title — horrible science.

I handed in my master thesis today, once and forever

A few poor souls were still writing the report 1 hour before hand in deadline!

Gestern und Heute fand der jährliche Notting Hill Carnival in London statt. Nebst dem Carnival in Rio ist es das grösste Strassenfestival mit etwa 2mio Besucher (im 2006). Auch dieses Jahr hatte es viele Leute, verdammt viele.

Die Heimreise hat ganze 3 Stunden gedauert

My thesis is printed yehaw! I only have to hand it in on Tuesday though.

It’s about 20 pages smaller than my BSc thesis, whether that’s good or bad … I don’t know. At least I’ve learned how to write more concisely. hehe.

Oh, and don’t blame me for the ugly title page. It’s the one provided by the department…

Now with Spass bei Seite, we were quite productive in the last months and I included some interesting things in the report. We already have some ideas on how to proceed from here. More on that later.

• I’m going to try to finish my thesis by tomorrow, so I can print it tomorrow evening. I predict a printer breakdown by Sunday morning at latest!
• Basically, I only have to write the abstract, conclusion and run the spell checker.
• 1.2L (2 pints) of reduced-fat milk per day evokes lactose intolerant reactions even for the strongest of us.
• I just found out, there are US pints which correspond to 0.47L and imperial pints which are 0.56L. Very useful metrics.

Das Datum meiner Mündlichen steht nun fest: 06.09.07 10:00.

• Grrr… nächsten Dienstag (28.08) ist Abgabedatum, das bedeutet, dass die Arbeit etwa diesen Freitag fürs drucken und binden fertig sein muss. Irgendwie gebe ich mir nicht so fest Mühe, da es anschliessend direkt weiter geht …nächste Woche werde ich hier die Masterarbeit bereitstellen
• Am 8 September können wir in unsere neue Wohnung zügeln.
• Am 10 September komme ich für eine Woche nach Basel zurück!
• Am 19 September habe ich meinen phd “Induction Day” …
• Bald sollte ich Bescheid über den EPSRC Antrag erhalten. Ich bin sehr am hoffen, denn ich möchte die 400 Stunden Arbeit vermeiden!
