Did you know there is a unit for measuring the warmth of a duvet (well, actually measuring thermal resistance) ?!

As the wikipedia entry put it neatly:

A tog is 0.1 m²K/W. In other words, the thermal resistance in togs is equal to ten times the temperature difference (in °C) between the two surfaces of a material, when the flow of heat is equal to one watt per square metre.

So, a lightweight duvet is about 4.5 Tog, while a winter duvet is in the range of 12.0 - 13.5 Tog.

Gestern gingen wir zum Portobello Market .. dem scheinbar “world’s largest antique market”. Dieser findet jedem Samstag und Sonntag in Nottinghill statt. Von kitschigen antiken Möbeln und Kronleuchtern gibt es auch alles andere was man bei einem world’s largest market erwartet .. Strassenkünstler, Essen, und viele kleine sinnlose Strassenstände. Letztes Weekend haben wir (die Schweizer Meetup Gruppe, wobei es mehr nicht-Schweizer als Schweizer hatte. Deutsche, Belgier, Australien, Italien, ..) einen London Pub Walk unternommen. Ich wusste überhaupt nicht was mich dabei erwartet .. ich dachte man geht von Pub zu Pub, bestaunt alte Holzdecken und trinkt dann jeweils ein Bier .. oder so. Dem war jedoch nicht so. Wir wanderten dem Themsen Südufer entlang, hörten ein paar Geschichten über Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, Londoner Gefängnisse und anderes. Auf dem Weg machten wir stop in zwei Pubs, in eines der beiden werde ich bestimmt wieder einkehren.

Das Unternehmen London Walks bietet uebrigens den beruechtigten Jack The Ripper Walk an.

Wie ihr euch natuerlich erinnert, gab es auf unserem Campus mal ein Club E1. Genau vor einem Jahr wurde dieser geschlossen, um Platz fuer ein modernes, neues Fitnesscenter zu machen. Ob das eine gute oder schlechte Idee war bleibt eine Frage … jedoch ein Jahr nach der Schliessung ist das Fitnesscenter immer noch nicht eroeffnet worden! Zuerst war die Eroeffnung fuer September 2007 geplant. Danach wurde sie auf Dezember verschoben, darauf hiess es “bestimmt im Januar!” … jetzt wurde mir so eben den neusten Stand der Dinge mitgeteilt “end of february - we hope!”.

Das ganze ist eine traurige Geschichte. Ein Mix aus katastrophaler Planung, Desinteresse, Unglueck und warscheinlich Geldmangel. Z.b. hatte der Contractor keine richtigen Plaene vom CS Department. Somit steht jetzt vor den Fenstern von unseren neu und teuer rennovierten Bueros eine Klimaanlage fuer das Gym. Aussicht haben die im 3. Stock jetzt nicht mehr .. was jedoch einwenig mehr stoert sind 89dB Laermpegel weniger als 5 Meter entfernt!

Ich schaetze mal, wenn das Ding oeffnet seine Tore Ende Maerz/Anfang April..

I found this on the workspace opposite to me. For me it looked like aliens in a bottle. What could it be? It was thoroughly taped up .. perhaps because of the smell!
