Allergy advice: contains text OR shocking truths on food labels

with 3 comments

Well ..every now and then you ask yourself what these people thought while creating the following food labels.
Especially funny are the allergy warning labels on nearly every food item you buy. Here is a list, sorted by its stupidity:

4th place:
Ok that is halfway sensible. It contains celery (ever heard of celery allergy?) and of course the nice warning of shellfish which really could lead to an allergy. The label is from a microwavable meal:

3rd place:
Breaking News: Mozzarella contains cows’ milk!! Believe it or not.

2nd place:
Now it starts getting weird. This is from a peanut butter jar. The ingredients list most notably says that this product consists of 97% peanuts. There’s a reason why it is called PEANUT butter. Still, it’s good to have the extra warning underneath.

1st place:
And the winner is… check out this label on a fish package (notice the red background and warning sign):

  1. I think listing the potential allergens is mandatory if the product contains them, even if it ends up with “Warning: this fish contains fish” kind of labels. Ingesting those allergens can be very fatal (as in horrible death) for many people.

But I do like the explanation and the “we would, but! not our fault! we’d be 100% organic if it were not impossible!”-feel with regard to the “Sea salt cannot be organic”-label.

  2. yes of course, that’s what I suspected as well. The question is only, if there is a legal need to attach these labels then either our law system is broken (because you can get sued for not saying that a fish is a fish) or the general public is completely stupid (for eating fish eventhough they know that they are allergic to fish)?

Ok .. there are the other kind of labels which say “contains traces of XXX” because the machines get used to produce different products.. whatever!! Who cares. hehe..
